The request comes after a Daily News investigation and a scathing city audit turned up numerous accounts of abusive racist and sexist behavior among the ranks. Bamattre is to be commended for acting, especially because the audit cited weak leadership as the main cause and that cast doubts about his ability to be the agent of change. It’s frustrating that there’s a big price tag to his solution, which means, as always in government, an expansion of the bureaucracy rather than simply holding wrongdoers accountable with tough discipline. Still, ending the harassment of women and minorities in the ranks of firefighters is worth the cost of hiring internal affairs investigators.
