A convincing away win over Down was followed by a win by a single point over Armagh in Glenfinn last Sunday. The manner of that 1-11 to 1-10 victory however gave the Donegal girls a huge lift, grinding out the result in the face of relentless pressure from the Orchard County.McLaughlin is rightly taking the girls to Clare the day before – otherwise a tiring 6am start would have been in order. A generous business sponsor stepped in to pick up the bill for an overnight stay.“We’re very happy where we are right now,” says the manager. “The girls showed their mettle when it really counted in Glenfinn last week and I was very pleased with the win and the two points.“There’s loads of work to do, and we’re looking forward to the Clare game because it will be tough game.”Clare at home and Clare on the road seem to be two different teams. Easily defeated away to Cavan in Round 1 they then rallied and will count themselves unlucky not to take the points against Meath.Donegal will be aware of that and will be ready for action, prepared by a team of dedicated coaches. At underage level teams naturally change every year, so the Derry and Donegal teams at Owenbeg tomorrow (Saturday) won’t know very much about each other. Derry ladies football however is on the up after their U14s picked up the Ulster C Championship title last year. But so too is Donegal football at this age level.“We saw more than 200 players at trials,” says the County U14 manager Greg Harkin, “that was the largest number ever.”“We have 40 girls on the Championship panel and there are 20 girls picked for a League competition so that’s great for ladies football in the county this year and a testament to the development work being done by the county and the clubs. “We’ll reduce that number to 30 next month ahead of our first Championship game against Fermanagh on April 11.“We had a good win against Sligo a fortnight ago but Derry will be a much tougher prospect. However I have a great bunch of girls who are extremely talented and very dedicated. If we continue to do the right things as a team, we can have a good year.”DONEGAL LADIES FOOTBALL: SENIORS AND U14s IN ACTION THIS WEEKEND was last modified: February 20th, 2015 by John2Share this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)Tags:ClareDerrydonegalLadiesSeniorsU14’slast_img read more
