A Special Treat

December 30, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgClick here to subscribe to the Pharr Out BlogHey y’all,When Brew and I REALLY indulge ourselves – like buying a soda or ice cream cone, we call our extravagance a “special treat.” Yesterday was our one-month wedding anniversary (yes, we keep track and yes, we celebrated it… for better or worse we are THAT couple) and it was full of special treats. The day started much like any other; I woke up at 5:30 AM, rolled over, kissed my husband adios and was off hiking before 6. About 3 hours into my morning hike I had a VERY special treat that I had been waiting on for a long time. I was a few miles from the VT/MA border when I heard something ahead of me on the trail. I looked up and- much to my surprise- saw a bear 30 yards away, my first bear ever on the East Coast. My initial thought was, “BEAR!!!” But then the more logical and conditioned side of my brain quickly chimed in: “No way. You’ve hiked over 5,000 miles on the East Coast and lived here your whole life and never seen a bear. You’re banned from bear sightings on this side of the Mississippi!” Then the two sides of my brain conferred through an intuitive checklist: Black? Check. Furry? Check. Rather large yet stalky? Check. Big, chubby ears? Check. (For some reason the ears were really important and this animal definitely had bear ears.) So yes, with requirements met, I decided that I was in fact staring at a bear. Then the creature spotted me, and bolted deep into the woods. But it was too late! I had seen it! I had spotted a bear! Yessss…!!!My next special treat of the morning came from entering a new state. Not a state of mind, mind you, but a literal state. That is, I crossed the border from Vermont to Massachusetts. I love Massachusetts because it brings on a slew of short states that you can hike across in 2 to 3 days and feel like you’re making real progress. When I finally reached the pre-appointed road, I ran into my husband’s arms and told him about the morning excitement (Yes, I literally ran into his arms and yes, I do it at every road crossing). Usually for lunch I grab some peanut butter and a banana, sit down for 10 minutes, then walk on, but on this day Brew had picked up a special anniversary lunch- a Subway sandwich! I love Subway! Some people are haters. In fact, I had to turn Brew onto the sandwich chain; but I say if you don’t like it, it’s your own fault… I mean you create your own meal – you’re your own Sandwich Artist, for goodness sake. And without prior guidelines, Brew had created a masterpiece. After lunch I climbed up Mount Greylock and Brew started up the mountain with me. Usually you can get water on top of the mountain at the lodge, but this summer all services at the summit are closed for renovations. Brew didn’t want me worrying about water, so before he hiked back to the car, he ran to a water source three-fourths of a mile off the trail to fill up my bottle. Talk about chivalry. Now I must have some kind of homing device that sets off rain clouds as I get close to the summit of Greylock. When I was a mile from the top, the sky opened up and I had to hike in a complete downpour. Unlike my ‘05 hike, though, there was no thunder or lightning or marble sized hail pelting me. And that in itself was a special treat.I met Brew that evening in Cheshire, MA. We found a place to sleep and shower before going out for pizza and ice cream. And when we got back to the tentsite while we were brushing our teeth, Brew discovered that his Vaseline jar had spilled all over his backpack. While he was cleaning things up, he had the nerve to laugh at me and say I “looked like Pocahontas” with my hair parted in the middle and my headlamp over it. He might have gotten the better of me if he hadn’t spit toothpaste into his beard then laughed so forcefully that he farted super-loud. But then that brought me to tears, and the tears blinded me and caused me to hit my head on the doorframe, which turned my tears of laughter into tears of pain and confusion. (This entire episode took place in about 2 minutes, sans alcohol. Amazing, eh?)Clearly, it was time for us to bring this day to a close. We ended it just how we began: in our tent lying beside each other. My favorite and best special treat of the trip is having Brew here to support me and share in this experience. Here’s to a great first month, and many more down the trail.last_img read more

BRO-TV: Day on the Trail

December 30, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgOn May 1st, Leah and I joined forces with the folks over at Visit Southern West Virginia to host a hike on one of West Virginia’s many fabulous trails. The Grandview section of the park was our destination, and with sunny skies, cool weather, and a great group of folks, we couldn’t have asked for a better time! The Grandview Rim Trail overlooks the New River, and there are awesome overlook platforms along the way that make for great photo opps! The trail is partly shaded by rhododendron and mountain laurel, making it a great destination when the plants are in bloom. To top off the hike, the wonderful team over at The Dish Cafe in Daniels, W.Va., met us at the end to prepare a delicious lunch: polenta cakes, grass-fed burgers, and salad with homemade dressing. Delicious! Thanks guys! We’ll be back for those avocado brownies 😉The view of the New River from Grandview Rim Trail. The view of the New River from Grandview Rim Trail.Looking to the horizon.Looking to the horizon.Me (left) Leah (right) rockin' the selfie.Me (left) Leah (right) rockin’ the selfie.IMG_8372Another view of the New River from a Grandview Rim overlook. The whole gang! The whole gang! The fabulous Leah on a fabulous day.The fabulous Leah on a fabulous day. last_img read more

Supetar has been asking for the introduction of an additional ferry line for years due to traffic jams, Jadrolinija has not responded

November 18, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgThe island of Brac is an island and the only connection between the island and the mainland is the ferry line. Accordingly, in order for tourists to be able to come to the island of Brac, they must use the ferry from Split to Supetar.I know a stupid statement, but unfortunately it’s important to point that out once again, no matter how funny it may be. However, as the number of tourist arrivals on the island of Brač grew, so did the infrastructure, so the capacity of the ferry that regularly transports guests from the mainland to the island of Brač did not increase. In the combination of poorer infrastructure and too small regular lines that connect Split and the island of Brač, big crowds have been created towards the island and Split for years. Sometimes even tourists in cars have to wait for more than three ferry arrivals to board a ferry to Split, which is frustrating to say the least and has a bad effect on tourism. However, the city of Supetar is aware of the problem, and through the Municipal Company GRAD doo, which is owned by the city of Supetar, they have been increasing the number of employees in the port and traffic wardens for years, and investing in traffic infrastructure as much as possible. However, as they care about solving the problem and the nervousness and frustration of the guests, since 2016 they have been writing to Jadrolinija to try to solve the problem together, but without the right answer and obvious will to try to alleviate the problem. So recently, they again sent a request to Jadrolinija to try to solve the problem together. “I don’t know how many times we want to inform you about the growing problem of traffic jams in the port of Supetar, caused by the impossibility of all vehicles to board the ferry to Split in adequate time. Namely, as you should know best, in recent years there has been a constant increase in the number of vehicles and passengers in the ferry port Supetar and they are “former” exclusively weekend crowds and for the whole week in the period from July 15 to August 31 and even and by mid-September.”Points out Marijana Šemanović in a statement and request to Jadrolinija, director of the Utility Company GRAD doo and adds that congestion leads to total traffic collapse, resentment and nervousness of tourists as well as negative images for the island of Brac, Supetar and the entire Croatian tourism. As their proposal, they propose the introduction of an additional sailing date for the ferry line 631 Split – Supetar in the period from 15.07 to 31.08. As well as the introduction of emergency lines as needed when crowds are created, and in the whole story due to crowds the regular line is delayed by half an hour or more which further complicates the whole situation because people are late for work and tourists on flights. Also, in Supetar, they have been appealing for years to extend the summer timetable, so that they can extend the tourist season. However, as they point out in the Jadrolinija press release, they do not listen to problems or answer inquiries, except for oral ones. How to develop tourism or extend the season if there are not enough regular ferry lines? Who would want to go back to the island of Brač more crazy and lose half a day waiting on the road just to get to the mainland (where a new crowd is waiting for him again)? All this is another proof of our spontaneous development of tourism, and Jadrolinija, as a state-owned company and a monopolist, must react. Ultimately, the introduction of an additional ferry or emergency line is cost-effective because at least one more ferry would be full. There is management and organization, just for things like this, and on the other hand I wonder how it was invested and invested in Jadrolinija when today after many years of tourism and ferry transport we are not able to optimally connect the islands to avoid such situations. On the other hand, if Jadrolinija does not want, does not know, cannot… then a concession should be announced for another carrier. This is a banal problem, and the solution is the introduction of new lines, which are, among other things, cost-effective. Put this problem on the table of any private entrepreneur and he will immediately find a solution, but obviously not the Jadrolinija Management.Again, we fall on the first and basic step, how can we develop tourism or extend the tourist season, if we can not ensure the basic – traffic accessibility. We can’t move forward like this, especially if we don’t communicate, especially Jadrolinija, which is owned by the state and so important for connecting the islands. Crazy, funny, tragic….This has nothing or at least should not have to do with politics, but exclusively with market and market development. We have to provide transportation from the island to the mainland if we want to engage in tourism. Without strategic and sustainable development there is no success.Read the full press release here: The problem of traffic jams at the entrance to the port of Supetarlast_img read more

Protect environment, think before you buy

October 20, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgCategories: Letters to the Editor, OpinionI used to envy my friend in Portland, Ore. She could recycle so much more than my community allowed in any of the places where we lived. Now, recycling options are dwindling even there. The reason, according to www.waste360.com, is that China has adopted new standards in the materials they will accept from the rest of the world. The U.S. exports about one-third of its recycling, and nearly half of that goes to China. Now, because the materials are being looked at as too dirty or even hazardous, they have made the decision not to accept it for their own environmental and health reasons. When you are shopping for the holidays, try to make your vision: “reduce, reuse and recycle.” Or buy second-hand. Think about the items you are buying. Consider if they are necessary and take a good look at the packaging. If you have a choice, buy the ones with the least packaging or those in recycled packages. Bring reusable bags to the store with you. You can take them to the hardware store, bookstore or big box store, as well as grocery stores. Think about giving reusable bags as gifts this year. You can never have too many. And wrap in something fun like newspaper or fabric.Maybe Oregon is the “canary in the coal mine,” and the rest of our nation of recyclers could be next. This will affect local landfills. So if that is your concern, please shop wisely because our land and environment are too important to become garbage dumps.Florence CarnahanSchenectadyMore from The Daily Gazette:EDITORIAL: Urgent: Today is the last day to complete the censusSchenectady, Saratoga casinos say reopening has gone well; revenue down 30%Motorcyclist injured in Thursday afternoon Schenectady crashSchenectady man dies following Cutler Street dirt bike crashSchenectady police reform sessions pivot to onlinelast_img read more

Moore of the same after 25 years on top

October 20, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgProperty shares are looking much better value than physical property and there is a need for consolidation in the sector with too many companies and liquidity only in the leading stocks. This is the sort of property analyst’s message that the industry has become used to in the 1990s. But the same message was being heard 50 years ago when Warburg (then known as Hurst-Brown, Buckmaster and Peter Hicks) began property research.Warburg’s first note, which came out in January 1949, was re-published this week to celebrate the broker’s 50 years of research and the retirement of head analyst Roger Moore after 25 years.Moore was arguably the doyen of property analysts and, until recently, was voted the best in the sector every year.Fifty years ago, there were 132 quoted property companies – roughly the same number as today.‘Very little changes over the cycles other than the names of companies and personalities,’ concludes Moore.‘Property will always be a sector prone to feast or famine and one in which fortunes can be made with little equity capital outlay won or lost. History shows that the shrewd investor cystallises or consolidates gains but those who become so intoxicated by their success that they begin to think they are infallible often lose their fortunes in cataclysmic fashion.’last_img read more

Five things we learned in the Premier League

August 13, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgShare on: WhatsApp London, United Kingdom | AFP | Arsenal’s 4-0 thrashing by Liverpool thrust manager Arsene Wenger back into the firing line, while leaders Manchester United now own the last unbeaten record in the Premier League. Here are five things we learned in the English top flight this weekend:History is repeating again for ArsenalThe goodwill engendered by Arsenal’s superb FA Cup triumph against Chelsea in May has been wiped away within three games of the new season. After a slapdash 4-3 win over Leicester City and a disappointing 1-0 loss at Stoke City, the wheels truly came off for Arsene Wenger’s side in Sunday’s humiliating 4-0 defeat at Liverpool.Wenger was able to select Alexis Sanchez for the first time this season after injury, but Arsenal’s habitual shortcomings were all on show: disorganisation, naivety in both defence and attack and a total lack of fight. Before the end, familiar cries of “Wenger out!” could be heard emanating from the away end. With just four days to go until the transfer window closes, Arsenal’s fans are bracing themselves for another season of gloom.Spurs’ Wembley hoodoo isn’t going awayThe longer Tottenham Hotspur’s difficulties at their new Wembley home continue, the harder it is for them to play down talk of a ‘Wembley jinx’.Leading 1-0 against Burnley on Sunday, they looked on course for a first league win of their season-long Wembley tenancy, only for Chris Wood to equalise for the visitors in stoppage time.Spurs have won just one of their last 11 games at the national stadium and if they cannot arrest that situation quickly, their title challenge will be over before the campaign has truly begun.Chelsea’s Morata is a work in progressRecruited from Real Madrid for a club record £58 million ($74.7 million, 62.7 million euros) to replace the exiled Diego Costa, Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata carries a weighty burden on his shoulders. He took his tally to two goals and two assists in his first two home games with a goal and an assist for Cesc Fabregas in Sunday’s 2-0 win over Everton. But the Spaniard cut an isolated figure for long periods, failing to link effectively with Pedro and Willian and supplying none of the muscular menace that Chelsea came to expect from Costa. Manager Antonio Conte admitted afterwards that it will take time for his new star to blend into Chelsea’s game-plan.Two into one won’t go for Martial and RashfordThe array of attacking talent at Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho’s disposal means Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial are currently fighting over one starting place on the left flank. In United’s two opening games, 4-0 wins over West Ham United and Swansea City, Rashford started before giving way for Martial, who scored on both occasions. The roles were reversed on Saturday as Martial started and Rashford came off the bench to break the deadlock in a 2-0 home victory over Everton. While both players have contributed to United’s 100 percent start, it will be the player who starts producing the goods from kick-off who nails down a starting place.Spirited Man City are up for the fightWith just seconds remaining at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday, Pep Guardiola was about to lose his cool in the south-coast sunshine.Manchester City were being held to a 1-1 draw by Bournemouth and it was the hosts who were pushing for a shock winner. But in the blink of an eye, Guardiola’s frustration turned to jubilation as Raheem Sterling fired in a deflected winner in the seventh minute of stoppage time.Sterling was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for charging into the away end in celebration, but Guardiola defended his players for wanting to share the moment with their fans.Crucially, after a damaging draw against Everton, City’s expensively assembled side got back to winning ways by showing they retain a strong appetite for success.last_img read more
