Battlefield 3 on consoles has smaller multiplayer maps fewer players

first_imgPatrick Bach, executive producer at game develper DICE, has admitted that the console versions of Battlefield 3 will have smaller multiplayer maps and fewer players than the PC version. On the PC version you can play with up to 64 people in multiplayer on full-size maps. On PS3 and Xbox 360, the number of players has been cut to just 24 and the maps reduced in size accordingly. The reason for the difference is one of compromise based on the limitations of the console hardware. DICE wanted to give everyone the same experience, so were unwilling to compromise on how the game looked and the gameplay on offer. That meant something else had to be sacrificed and player numbers seemed like the best option.Bach admitted that 64 players on consoles was possible, but they’d have to use lower resolution textures and most likely remove some of the vehicles from the experience. So the question comes down to which you as a gamer would prefer, less players and smaller maps or big maps that look worse and have no vehicles?Of course, if you intend on playing the PC version that’s not a compromise you need to make, but then you probably spent considerably more buying your PC than it costs to buy a console. In the end, the actual experience will determine how players react to this. The console maps have not been reduced in size due to limitations, but because there are fewer players it will “keep the action up.”While this news may have a few console gamers upset, it’s unlikely DICE would want to ship a game where the multiplayer hasn’t been fine-tuned to offer the best experience. If that required 64 players then I think they’d take the graphics hit and implement it. But 24 player maps obviously work, and may even work better than 64 player maps in some cases.via CVGlast_img read more
