Normandy, homeported in Norfolk, Va., will support relief efforts by providing air surveillance for the heavy air traffic in the area. The ship will also act as a ready deck, or an at sea platform able to accept helicopters on deck and provide refueling services. Helicopter Antisubmarine Squadron (Light) (HSL) 46, from Mayport, Fla., has two SH-60B helicopters onboard Normandy and will also contribute to the relief efforts with additional air lift support. *Vinson Receives Haitian MEDEVAC Patients * The aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) received seven injured Haitian civilians at approximately 7:30 p.m. EST Jan. 16 when a U.S. Coast Guard MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter on a MEDEVAC mission was forced to divert due to weather. The helicopter was taking the earthquake victims from Port-Au-Prince to a hospital near Cape Haitien on the island’s northern coast. The ship’s medical personnel are currently treating the seven Haitians, including a two-hour old infant. The aircraft carrier, which arrived on scene within 72 hours of tasking, is supporting the unified U.S. military response to the disaster by providing its 19 helicopters to airlift humanitarian supplies to the Haitian people.last_img read more

As COVID-19 resurges, Johnson pleads with UK: Obey the rules

October 19, 2020 0 Comments

first_img#usesoap Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged the British people on Wednesday to obey rules imposed to tackle a rapidly accelerating second wave of the coronavirus outbreak, cautioning that otherwise a tougher lockdown could follow.New cases of COVID-19 are rising by more than 7,000 per day in the United Kingdom though Johnson is facing growing opposition to lockdown measures which have wrought some of the worst economic damage in at least a century. After a reprimand from the speaker of the House of Commons, Johnson defused a rebellion in parliament over the way such onerous rules were imposed by promising angry lawmakers more say over any new national measures. Topics : But at a briefing in Downing Street flanked by his chief medical and scientific advisers, Johnson acknowledged the opposition to his curbs on freedom but said the British people should follow lockdown rules.”I know that some people will think we should give up and let the virus take its course despite the huge loss of life that would potentially entail,” Johnson said.”I have to say I profoundly disagree and I don’t think it’s what the British people want. I don’t think they want to throw in the sponge, they want to fight and defeat the virus,” he said.Britain, which has the worst official COVID-19 death toll in Europe, is facing a rapid acceleration of outbreaks across the country, England’s Chief Medical Officer Chris Whitty said. Chief Scientific Adviser Patrick Vallance said the outbreak was not yet under control.Swathes of the United Kingdom and millions of citizens are subject to local restrictions brought in to try to slow the second wave of COVID-19 infections. Britain has reported more than 42,143 deaths from the virus – the world’s fifth highest total.”If the evidence requires it, we will not hesitate to take further measures that would, I’m afraid, be more costly than the ones we put into effect now,” Johnson said.Lockdown backlashJohnson, who has had to apologize after getting muddled over local lockdown rules on Tuesday, is facing growing anger within his own Conservative Party over the most severe restrictions in peacetime history that are destroying swathes of the economy. In a rare intervention by the chief officer of the House of Commons, Speaker Lindsay Hoyle scolded Johnson for making rules in a “totally unsatisfactory” way.”The way in which the government has exercised its powers to make secondary legislation during this crisis has been totally unsatisfactory,” Hoyle told parliament. After Johnson’s government offered concessions, lawmakers passed the extension of the Coronavirus Act, which hands the government emergency powers to introduce restrictions, voting 330 to 24 in favor. As Johnson grapples with both COVID-19 and dissent in party ranks, the economic damage was laid bare. The United Kingdom’s economy shrank by a record 19.8% in the second quarter of 2020 – meaning it contracted more than any other Group of Seven economy in the first half of 2020. last_img read more

State to buy office building for two agencies, rent out first floor

August 13, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgDES MOINES — Statewide elected officials have approved spending nearly $7.8 million to buy a Des Moines office building. The four-story structure will be the new home of the Iowa Economic Development Authority. The Iowa Finance Authority already rents space in the building. Debi Durham is director of both state agencies, which soon will occupy the same building.“We can begin to strategize and plan together. It’s just really an alignment of our programs,” Durham told Radio Iowa. “We’re starting to do that now but, again, it’s so much easier when we are co-located and they can work next to each other.”The office building sits on 10 acres, on the edge of downtown Des Moines. Staff from the Iowa Economic Development Authority will begin moving to the new space later this year.“The plan is we’ll be here as one happy family in December,” Durham said. The Iowa Economic Development Authority and the Iowa Finance Authority will occupy the second, third and fourth floors of the building. The first floor will be leased and that rental income will be funneled to Iowa Finance Authority projects. The Iowa Economic Development Authority has been leasing space in an office building a few blocks from the state Capitol. Once Durham’s agency moves out, the IT department for state government will move in. Durham said what’s officially known as the “Office of the Chief Information Officer” has been flooded in its current location twice.“They were in a situation where they needed to do something different,” Durham said. “It actually aligned that the space…and the robustness of the IT that we had at the IEDA, it actually is a perfect fit for them.”Durham said she’s talked with key legislators from both parties to show the deal that’s been struck “puts the state in a better financial position” than continuing to pay rent on two separate buildings for the two agencies.last_img read more
