Autism conference examines therapy method

first_imgThe Special Friends Club of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s — a student group that pairs students with children in the South Bend community who are affected by autism spectrum disorders in the hopes of building friendships — hosted the sixth annual Notre Dame Autism Conference on Tuesday.Junior Allison Baglini, president of the Special Friends Club, said the group chose the keynote speaker for their first conference after a two-year hiatus to focus the conference on applied behavior analysis (ABA).“Another goal of our club is to increase education and awareness of autism and autism research, and this year’s conference is about applied behavior analysis,” she said. “ … It’s a great opportunity to reflect on the fact that there are many different approaches to intervention in the lives of individuals with autism, and that’s what I hope people take from it — just to think a little bit more about different approaches towards intervention.”The club chose ABA as the topic for the conference to explore due to its relevance, as well as interest from parents of children involved with the club who may be searching for effective methods of intervention, Baglini said.The conference consisted of a lecture aimed at students, faculty and staff entitled “Working Towards a Progressive Model of ABA,” and a family workshop entitled “Making Meaningful Differences Through ABA.”Keynote speaker Justin Leaf, director of research at the Autism Partnership Foundation, said the Autism Partnership Foundation provides intervention assistance to people affected by autism. This disorder affects one in every 68 children, a number that has objectively risen, Leaf said.Though there are hundreds of approaches to improving the lives of those with autism, Leaf said he, along with The Autism Foundation, endorses ABA, an approach developed by psychologist Edward Thorndike in the 19th century and based on behaviorism.In other words, Leaf said, ABA is “simply good teaching,” which involves providing motivation, clear feedback and assistance when necessary, but building independence at the same time.Leaf said he has seen positive results from the ABA method in his own clinic. When using the ABA method, he said, 70 percent of the children who received intensive ABA intervention are now considered to meet the best outcome according to clinical data.“We know that when individuals receive quality intervention they can make really good improvements, life altering changes for the better,” he said.However, Leaf said, ABA has gained a negative reputation among those who have seen it implemented in incorrect forms, including an overly rigid curriculum, the use of food as reinforcement and other characteristics that Leaf deemed “bad ABA.”Components of the progressive model Leaf has seen success with include a more structured, yet flexible approach that allows parents and teachers to make in-the-moment decisions regarding reactions to their child’s behavior, he said. This quality ABA is conducted intensively in a natural setting that teaches a child to handle distractions, with a curriculum that does not necessarily have to adhere to rigid protocols.Leaf voiced some concerns about inadequate training of instructors of people with autism, and said staff members should be fun, engaging, receptive to feedback and professional. The majority of instructors are certified using the Routines-Based Interview (RBI) technique, which Leaf said he believes involves a smaller amount of training than should be required.“There’s no research that shows 40 hours is enough,” he said. “For me it takes years and years of training to be proficient at it … the certificate means you are only minimally qualified.”To combat this issue, Leaf said he promoted time training academies, such as the Center for Applied Behavioral Analysis (CABA), which provides intensive quality ABA training to individuals.“We need people who are investing in training and realize investing in our professionals is the way to go,” he said. “Our approach is based on clinical judgment. Our approach is not rigid protocols, our approach is to have flexibility to adapt and change based on the needs of the child and the environment which they’re in.”Leaf warned against falling for the resurgence of “social thinking” — a procedure based on the idea that change in thought will force a change in behavior — and other intervention techniques that have little to no scientific research to back up their claims of success. Warning signs of such procedures include the reliance on anecdotal evidence to prove success, Leaf said.“I want you to behave differently if you’re in the field,” he said. “I want you to do that progressive model, I want you implement letting teachers make clinical judgments and make their own decisions, as opposed to following rigid protocols. And that’s my hope for the field.”In his second talk aimed at parents of children on the autism spectrum, Leaf once again discussed the same ABA techniques, and provided additional information that would assist a parent in using the methods in their home. In addition to implementing clinical judgment, curriculum that teaches applicable skills and quality staff, Leaf urged parents to keep high hopes for their children affected by disorders on the autism spectrum.“We are in this field to make meaningful differences, and parents, you should have high hopes and professionals, you should have high hopes,” he said. “We have to be like the little engine that could, we have to be like my idol from Notre Dame, Rudy … or Rocky or Helen Keller. Supetar has been asking for the introduction of an additional ferry line for years due to traffic jams, Jadrolinija has not responded

Accordingly, in order for tourists to be able to come to the island of Brac, they must use the ferry from Split to Supetar.I know a stupid statement, but unfortunately it’s important to point that out once again, no matter how funny it may be. However, as the number of tourist arrivals on the island of Brač grew, so did the infrastructure, so the capacity of the ferry that regularly transports guests from the mainland to the island of Brač did not increase.In the combination of poorer infrastructure and too small regular lines that connect Split and the island of Brač, big crowds have been created towards the island and Split for years. Sometimes even tourists in cars have to wait for more than three ferry arrivals to board a ferry to Split, which is frustrating to say the least and has a bad effect on tourism. However, the city of Supetar is aware of the problem, and through the Municipal Company GRAD doo, which is owned by the city of Supetar, they have been increasing the number of employees in the port and traffic wardens for years, and investing in traffic infrastructure as much as possible.However, as they care about solving the problem and the nervousness and frustration of the guests, since 2016 they have been writing to Jadrolinija to try to solve the problem together, but without the right answer and obvious will to try to alleviate the problem. So recently, they again sent a request to Jadrolinija to try to solve the problem together. “I don’t know how many times we want to inform you about the growing problem of traffic jams in the port of Supetar, caused by the impossibility of all vehicles to board the ferry to Split in adequate time. As well as the introduction of emergency lines as needed when crowds are created, and in the whole story due to crowds the regular line is delayed by half an hour or more which further complicates the whole situation because people are late for work and tourists on flights. Also, in Supetar, they have been appealing for years to extend the summer timetable, so that they can extend the tourist season. However, as they point out in the Jadrolinija press release, they do not listen to problems or answer inquiries, except for oral ones.How to develop tourism or extend the season if there are not enough regular ferry lines? Who would want to go back to the island of Brač more crazy and lose half a day waiting on the road just to get to the mainland (where a new crowd is waiting for him again)?All this is another proof of our spontaneous development of tourism, and Jadrolinija, as a state-owned company and a monopolist, must react. Ultimately, the introduction of an additional ferry or emergency line is cost-effective because at least one more ferry would be full. There is management and organization, just for things like this, and on the other hand I wonder how it was invested and invested in Jadrolinija when today after many years of tourism and ferry transport we are not able to optimally connect the islands to avoid such situations.On the other hand, if Jadrolinija does not want, does not know, cannot… then a concession should be announced for another carrier. This is a banal problem, and the solution is the introduction of new lines, which are, among other things, cost-effective. Put this problem on the table of any private entrepreneur and he will immediately find a solution, but obviously not the Jadrolinija Management.Again, we fall on the first and basic step, how can we develop tourism or extend the tourist season, if we can not ensure the basic – traffic accessibility. We can’t move forward like this, especially if we don’t communicate, especially Jadrolinija, which is owned by the state and so important for connecting the islands. Crazy, funny, tragic….This has nothing or at least should not have to do with politics, but exclusively with market and market development. We have to provide transportation from the island to the mainland if we want to engage in tourism. Hoddle can revive Spurs – Ardiles

United to fly from Palmdale

Aviation demand is expected to double in the next 20 to 30 years. Barbara Boswell, finance director for neighboring Lancaster, said the city would take advantage of the new service – and that she would personally be glad to avoid the San Diego Freeway. “If it’s a choice between LAX or here, I’m coming here,” said Boswell, who lives in Santa Clarita. “It’s no fun to be on the 405 anymore. And it’s closer mileage-wise.” Local residents are keeping their feet on the ground, though, having seen similar efforts to bring commercial flights to Palmdale fail. “It better work,” said Larry Chimbole, a former Palmdale mayor and an airport advocate for more than 40 years. “I have to believe we’re going to make this work. With all the talk of regional air service, this is timely.” PALMDALE – United Airlines will begin service in June from the high desert to the Bay Area under a plan approved Monday to ease congestion at Los Angeles International Airport and develop Palmdale’s regional airport into a commercial hub. In a unanimous vote, the Los Angeles World Airports Commission agreed to negotiate a revenue agreement with United for twice-daily service. The pact would provide up to $2 million from LAWA and a federal grant, channeled through the city of Palmdale, to underwrite losses the airline might incur from providing the service. “Today, we celebrate a great victory for regionalization,” LAWA Commissioner Alan Zifkin said. The move is part of an effort to ease growing congestion at LAX with the side effect of saving travelers from the Antelope, Santa Clarita and northern San Fernando valleys the hellish commute on Interstate 405. One big plus this time around is that United would fly jetliners rather than propeller aircraft. The flights also would be going to a major airport. “This is the first real service we’ve had,” Chimbole said. The key, Chimbole said, will be in marketing, particularly to draw passengers from the Santa Clarita and San Fernando valleys to the southwest and from Victor Valley to the east. “It’s got to be promoted,” Chimbole said. “There’s a fuel savings and a big savings in parking.” The last airline to operate out of Palmdale, Nevada-based Scenic, operated 19-seat turboprop aircraft that flew to the North Las Vegas Airport. “The fact we have a genuine carrier going to a genuine airport is a good thing,” said state Sen. George Runner, R-Lancaster. “Hopefully, we will demonstrate how this airport will be used.” Runner said there are two ways to get airlines to the airport – using incentives, such as the case with United; and increasing gate fees at LAX to push airlines to Palmdale. “LAWA has the ability to steer airlines this way,” Runner said. Another failure would not bode well for the airport, Runner said. “With each alternative you try, it reinforces in people’s minds that it’s not ready yet,” Runner said. “I hope this succeeds.” Corporate travel will be vital to keeping the Palmdale service viable. Lockheed Martin, one of the region’s largest employers with about 4,000 Antelope Valley workers, was consulted by LAWA about its potential use of the Palmdale airport. Lockheed Martin had hoped for service to either Dallas-Fort Worth or into Denver. San Francisco is still a viable option, provided fares are competitive, said company spokeswoman Dianne Knippel. “For long-distance travel, we will sure use it,” Knippel said. “Instead of driving to LAX, you can save some time.” For her own travel, Knippel said she liked the idea of being able to use a local airport rather than get up very early to catch a morning flight out of LAX. “If it doesn’t cost me any more, I’ll go to San Francisco,” Knippel said. “It’ll save 21/2 to three hours driving to LAX.” “This provides our customers in the Antelope Valley with additional service,” said United spokesman Jeff Kovick. “This is an additional service we’re providing. We’re not taking anything away from LAX. It’s an alternative for our customers to access our service.” Kovick said that if the Palmdale-San Francisco route proves successful, other destinations might be added. A consultant’s study for Los Angeles County, commissioned in 2001, stated that Palmdale could be a profitable market for an airline heading to a western hub, such as San Francisco. The report, prepared by Tri-Star Marketing, described the market area from which the Palmdale airport could draw – about 600,000 people, taking in Santa Clarita as well as the Antelope Valley. Such a market could produce 1 million to 1.5 million airline boardings a year, according to the Tri-Star study. To attract an airline, a coalition of airport supporters put together an incentive package valued at $4.6 million, with $2 million slated to underwrite losses incurred from providing the service. That package includes a $900,000 grant from the federal government secured by Palmdale city government toward luring in an airline. The Palmdale City Council will vote Wednesday on the recommendation for LAWA to negotiate with United. United was endorsed over Delta Airlines, which also submitted a bid. Both airlines offered service in the past to Palmdale, but withdrew in the late 1980s. The incentives being offered now were packaged by a coalition called Wheels Up Palmdale that includes Palmdale, Los Angeles and Los Angeles County government, the Antelope Valley Board of Trade, the Greater Antelope Valley Economic Alliance, the Los Angeles Economic Development Corporation and the U.S. Air Force. In addition to money to underwrite losses, the incentives include marketing efforts and waivers on terminal rent. The LA/Palmdale Regional Airport is composed of a 9,000-square-foot terminal building and parking lot at Air Force Plant 42. Under an agreement with the Air Force, Plant 42 can be used by civilian airliners for as many as 50 flights a day, and there are provisions to expand to 400 flights a day. LAWA estimates it will cost about $4 million annually to operate the Palmdale airport.
