first_imgThe scene in Joseph Duffy’s locker room in Vegas. He faces Dustin Poirier shortly.UFC: ‘We’ll have our own Las Vegas in the Hills of Donegal’ is a famous line from the song by The Goats Don’t Shave – however tonight in the bright lights of Nevada, that is true as Joseph Duffy takes to the octagon.Duffy was originally scheduled to face Dustin Poirier as the main headline fight at UFC Dublin. However, when he suffered concussion in sparring, UFC medics postponed the fight much to the disappointment of scores of Donegal fan who were destined to invade Dublin. The fight was quickly re-fixed, and Duffy’s clash with Poirier will be the headline preliminary flight on tonight’s UFC card.Duffy is based in Canada, and trains out of the world-class Tri-Star Gym and by his own accord has had a superb training camp. His close friends and family have jetted out for the fight, but the timing has made it difficult for a lot of his supporters – who are unfortunately been unable to make the event.Duffy is expected in the octagon after midnight and we’ll have a full report and reaction on the fight. O’Donnell’s Bar in Burtonport is packed in anticipation for the fight – and they’ll be hoping their local hero can continue his unbeaten start to life in the UFC.John Paul ‘Scotty’ Boyle, who works in the Irish Defence Forces, knows his thing or two about combat, an he fancies a first round KO.John Paul told Donegal Daily, “I fancy Joseph to do the business early on, it will be a serious test for him as Poirier has great pedigree.“But I fancy Joseph to take him out early, hopefully he can do the business, one thing is for sure – is that the whole area is right behind him.“Come on Joe!” Paul ‘Brunch’ Gallagher told Donegal Daily, “I done a lot of sparring with him in his younger days, so I know what he’s capable of.“He’s a serious fighter, and I hope he utilizes the skills I passed on to him years ago.“I think he will win, but it might go the distance – he’s a class act and a great fella so here’s hoping we’re celebrating late into the night.”‘WE’LL HAVE OUR OWN LAS VEGAS IN THE HILLS OF DONEGAL’ – DUFFY SET FOR VEGAS BATTLE was last modified: January 3rd, 2016 by Mark ForkerShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

Alberta’s First Passivhaus?

December 16, 2019 0 Comments

first_imgConstruction costs at $175 per sq. ft.In all, he expects construction costs to be about $500,000, or about $175 per sq. ft. Emilie Zeibin writes in her blog that construction costs will be about 20% higher than standard construction. One difficulty has been locating tradespeople willing to try new construction techniques, she says.“Already familiar with this method, Jim has been more surprised by how long this process is taking,” Emilie writes. “Since this method is fairly new in Canada, it took a bit to find people in the trades willing to try something unconventional. It seems that a lot of the trades are hard to reach and even harder to get a quote from for something this unusual.“In near desperation, Jim contacted Peter Amerongen of Habitat Studios for assistance. As it turns out, the trades that had been working with Peter Amerongen on his highly efficient houses (some of them Net-Zero), have been open to our project.”The Zeibins hope to move into their new house in March 2014. Double-stud walls and plenty of insulationThe house is being built on a corner lot in a new subdivision of Fort Saskatchewan, about 30 minutes northeast of Edmonton. Like all Passivhaus projects, it has far more insulation than a conventionally built house and will be carefully air-sealed to meet the stringent Passivhaus requirement for air leakage.“Architectural controls imposed by the land developer largely dictate overall aesthetic themes to achieve a consistent neighbourhood character,” a blog entry on the design says. “While somewhat at odds with basic sustainable lifestyle choices (e.g. requirement for an attached two-car garage), the outcome still proves to be an environmentally high-performing design that is expected to achieve official Passive House Certification.”Exterior walls are insulated to R-75 with a combination of Roxul mineral wool and fiberglass batts. The roof is insulated to R-94. The concrete foundation is insulated with 12 in. of expanded polystyrene insulation (EPS), applied to both the outside of the foundation and completely around the footings, roughly R-48 but higher in some spots.Exterior, above-grade walls incorporate a 2×6 structural inner layer and a 2×4 outer layer on 16-in. wide plates (strips of OSB). Studs, which are on 24-in. centers, are connected with strips of 3/8 in. OSB. On the inside of the 2×6 wall, 5/8-in. OSB sheathing, sealed with Siga Rissan tape, is the air and vapor barrier. A separate 2×4 wall on the interior, insulated with fiberglass batts, provides room for wiring and plumbing, leaving the OSB air barrier unscathed. The roof is framed with raised-heel trusses and insulated with 30 in. of blown-in cellulose. The windows are triple-glazed.Heat will be provided by a natural gas boiler and small, wall-mounted radiators, Jim says. The house also will have a heat recovery ventilator. A retired chemical engineer, his wife and architect son are collaborating on a 2,860-sq. ft. house in an Edmonton, Alberta, suburb they hope will become the first in the province to win certification from the Canadian Passive House Institute (CanPHI).Cottonwood Passive House, as the Zeibin family is calling it, is the first post-retirement project for Jim Zeibin, a chemical engineer who spent his career in the oil industry.“Working in the oil industry meant that we moved around a lot,” Emilie Zeibin wrote in a blog about the project earlier this month. “Jim was tired of living in houses that leaked, had cold windows and were expensive to heat.”So he decided to build a comfortable house that didn’t use much energy. Initially attracted to net zero energy houses that were being constructed in Edmonton, Jim eventually decided that route would be too expensive. His son David, an architect, suggested he look at the Passivhaus standard and the two later took a week-long course in Vancouver to learn more. David, a LEED accredited professional who holds a degree in engineering physics as well as architecture, then signed on as designer. The project is described in an unusually well illustrated blog that includes photos taken at various stages of construction.last_img read more

You Have Not Yet Booked the Revenue

first_img Essential Reading! Get my first book: The Only Sale Guide You’ll Ever Need “The USA Today bestseller by the star sales speaker and author of The Sales Blog that reveals how all salespeople can attain huge sales success through strategies backed by extensive research and experience.” Buy Now You have been calling on your dream client forever. Actually, you’ve been calling a little longer than that. You finally managed to pin down the person who cares the most about what you do, about the value you create, and about the exact problems you solve. You have a meeting with your dream client, and it couldn’t have gone any better. You shared some ideas about your view of things, and they asked amazingly relevant questions, questions that allowed you to answer in a way that convinced them they are right in your sweet spot. On your way out of the meeting, your first discovery meeting, they asked, “What do we do next?”Boom! This, ladies and gentleman, is a deal.Not. So. Fast. This is potentially an opportunity. It is potentially an exceptional opportunity, the kind that comes around every year or two, when you are working hard, and when the Gods of prospecting are smiling on you. This may be a deal, but right now, it is not a win.The fact that you have a potentially big deal changes nothing. It doesn’t mean that you can stop nurturing other potential dream clients because to do so is to tempt fate. Even though this opportunity is safely lodged in your pipeline, you are not absolved of your responsibility to prospect and create additional opportunities. Even though your sales manager may be every bit as excited as you, creating a single opportunity, no matter how large, and no matter how certain you are that you will win, doesn’t mean you can sit on that deal like a Mother Hen, doing nothing for 39 hours a week while you sit on this deal, waiting confidently for it to hatch. The truth of the matter is, there is a great reason to celebrate creating new opportunities. In fact, opportunity creation is undervalued. Way undervalued. But, even though you have cause for joy, you do not have cause to let up. You have not yet booked the revenue, and until you have done so, it’s business as usual, postponing the real celebration until you have won the deal.last_img read more

Credit: Giustino Bovenzi / Lantern PhotographerThe Ohio State women’s volleyball team (16-2, 5-1) is showing the Big Ten that it is a force to be reckoned with, grabbing wins its first two road games of its conference schedule this weekend — including another win over a ranked foe — to stretch its winning streak to five.No. 9 OSU took a pair of victories in Illinois, topping Northwestern (11-6, 3-3) on Friday night in Evanston, before taking down No. 13 Illinois (11-6, 2-4) on Saturday in Champaign. In Saturday’s win over the Fighting Illini, OSU got big contributions from across the board as it came away with a four-set victory (25-20, 24-26, 25-18, 27-25).Senior outside hitter Elizabeth Campbell helped guide the Buckeyes with her ninth double-double of the year (18 kills and 13 digs) and added four block assists, giving her a team-leading 20 points. Reigning co-Big Ten Player of the Week Audra Appold was close behind with 19.5 points on 17 kills and two blocks (one solo). The freshman outside hitter also had a career-high 19 digs for her second double-double on the season.Junior middle blocker Taylor Sandbothe (10 kills, six blocks) and senior outside hitter Katie Mitchell (11 kills) also broke the double-digit point mark, while freshman setter Taylor Hughes notched a career-best 52 assists to go along with five kills and five blocks. Junior libero Valeria León had 19 digs, and sophomore outside hitter Luisa Schirmer picked up 10. Mitchell had seven of her 11 kills in the first set, as OSU never trailed after taking an early 5-4 lead. The second set saw Illinois lead the majority of the way. A late charge from the Buckeyes tied things at 24, but the Fighting Illini captured the final two points to tie the match at one.OSU had seven of its 13 blocks for the game in the third set — including three each from Hughes and Sandbothe — as it came out firing to take a quick 5-0 lead that it would not surrender. In what would prove to be the deciding fourth set, OSU found itself in a 9-3 hole, but clawed its way back at 14 and again at 24. The Buckeyes didn’t take their first lead until late but it came at the right time, as they came away with a 27-25 win to take the match. The win over Illinois marked OSU’s sixth win over a top-25 opponent on the year and its third in Big Ten play.Behind a proficient .356 attack percentage, OSU swept its first match of the weekend on Friday, topping Northwestern in three sets (25-19, 25-20, 25-18). Appold kept her hot streak rolling, leading the Buckeyes with 19.5 points on 18 kills and two blocks (one solo), while fellow freshman Hughes did a little bit of everything, picking up 33 assists, three block assists, two aces and one kill. Sandbothe added 11.5 points on nine kills and three block assists. The first set was hotly contested, with 14 ties and seven lead changes, but OSU was able to pull away late with a 9-1 run to take the early lead. After going down early in the second set, the Buckeyes used a 5-0 run to take the lead, 10-8, and didn’t look back, powered by seven kills from Appold. The freshman had seven more kills in the final set, in which OSU led the whole way after breaking a 2-2 stalemate early on.The Buckeyes are next scheduled to return to the court next weekend when they host No. 12 Purdue on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by Indiana on Sunday at 1 p.m. in St. John Arena. read more
