No. 4: Uncertainty among running backs

September 17, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgWith Syracuse football training camp approaching, The Daily Orange beat writers, Sam Blum, Jesse Dougherty, Matt Schneidman and Paul Schwedelson, will reveal the top 15 preseason storylines with a new one every other day. Make sure to check and click here to see all the posts as we count down to camp.Syracuse’s running backs underperformed last season, scoring just two touchdowns, and none of its top three rushers will return to the position group in 2015. Prince-Tyson Gulley and Adonis Ameen-Moore graduated while Ervin Philips is switching to the hybrid position. That leaves juniors Devante McFarlane and George Morris — neither found the end zone last season — as the only returners. Freshmen Dontae Strickland and Jordan Fredericks may also see playing time among a position group without a proven star. While McFarlane is listed as the starter on the preseason depth chart, little separates him and Morris. Both are 6 feet tall and McFarlane weighs 193 pounds compared to Morris’ 190. More importantly, neither separated themselves during spring practices as they adjusted to taking the bulk of the carries.Last season McFarlane rushed for 169 yards on 28 attempts, 86 of them coming on one run and averaging 3.1 yards per carry on all other runs during the season. Morris carried the ball 35 times for 101 yards, an average of 2.9 yards per carry.AdvertisementThis is placeholder textEntering training camp, Strickland is listed ahead of Fredericks on the depth chart, though rated both with three stars and both put up big-time numbers in their senior years of high school. Strickland ran for 1,200 yards and 17 touchdowns on 102 carries at South Brunswick (New Jersey) High School. At Lawrence (New York) High School, Fredericks rushed 184 times for 2,156 yards and 35 touchdowns.Tim Lester has a stable of unproven running backs in his first full season as offensive coordinator. But with that uncertainty comes the opportunity for players to step up and rebound from last year. First International Mermaid Museum in Washington

August 5, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgFacebook234Tweet0Pin0Submitted by Westport WineryThe Roberts family, founders of Westport Winery and Ocean’s Daughter Distillery, plan to build the world’s first International Mermaid Museum. The focus will be on marine life and merfolk mythology, to honor their years on and below the water, and to create a fun and engaging learning environment. The museum will reside on the property of their renowned Westport Winery Garden Resort located halfway between Aberdeen and Westport in Washington State. You may be asking yourself, what is a Mermaid Museum? The goal of the museum is to create a learning center that will offer education to all ages about the underwater world by wrapping it in merfolk mythology. The museum will be enjoyed by visitors and locals alike. The non-profit group intends to develop a curriculum with an educational emphasis on teaching children to write their own myth or create merfolk art. And finally, they would like to fund scholarships for local students who do not “fit” into the traditional college model. Specifically, awarding scholarships to students who need assistance in schooling that will allow them to work in the local maritime industry. The non-profit’s board of directors includes a “gossip” of mermaids: Kim Roberts, Carrie Roberts and Jamie Walsh of Aberdeen; Karyl Vasereno, Jill Jacobs and Brook Maples of Westport; Deb Blake of Cosmopolis; Susan Conniry of Ocean Shores; Dodie Brogan of Elma; Jane Hewitt of Montesano; and Laurie Bowman of South Bend. There is no other museum in the world dedicated to mermaids. So why did the Roberts family decide to create the first?Kim Roberts, who created the concept for the museum, says it has a clear mission. “First and foremost, we want to teach our local students and visitors about the world’s unique ocean ecology from seashore to the seafloor. We think that offering this through the mythology of merfolk will allow the museum to engage all ages in a fun and unique manner. When you look around the world, virtually all seafaring nations have mermaid lore. This is one of those things that unites different cultures.”Blain Roberts, who partners with his wife Kim, and their adult children Carrie and Dana in the businesses, said, “Since we opened the winery in 2008, we have donated a portion of the proceeds from each wine to different local charities. These contributions total over $500,000. As we launch Ocean’s Daughter Distillery, we see an opportunity to create a legacy gift to our community.”Winery general manager Carrie Roberts said, “As I was growing up my parents owned the largest charter scuba diving business in Hawaii. I had a special opportunity not afforded to most kids to learn from them about the undersea world. At the same time, Disney produced The Little Mermaid, so I was doubly captivated.”Both Blain and Kim were US Coast Guard licensed boat captains. Plus, Blain was a renown underwater photographer and Kim, as an architect, also owned an art gallery. Kim said, “We think we can bring in the lore of mermaids along with art, music, literature, and even the hoaxes, to create a captivating experience.”The family said the idea started when one of their lifetime friends decided to mail his entire shell collection to them. Among the rarities was a shell called a mermaid’s comb. Blain told the rest of the family about the shell’s nature of not sinking in the sediment because of its spines. Kim said, “While he was talking, I was imagining a mermaid running it through her hair because of its evocative name.” This became the inspiration for creating a museum.Inquiries about making financial donations or items to include in the display are encouraged by emailing [email protected]last_img read more

Five must-see experiences at National FFA Convention

December 17, 2019 0 Comments

first_imgShare Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest You will not want to leave Indianapolis without taking part in these five thingsThe 89th National FFA Convention & Expo will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 19 to 22. The four-day convention is an unforgettable experience for students who attend. FFA members from across the nation come together once a year to celebrate their achievements and become motivated for what’s next. This year Indianapolis will be packed full of opportunities for attendees to engage in including general sessions, motivational keynote speakers, tours, concerts, service projects and more.Navigating the sea of blue corduroy jackets at convention can be a little overwhelming at times. Listed below are five “must-see” experiences you will want to do before leaving the 89th National FFA Convention & Expo.Download the National FFA Convention & Expo mobile appAvailable on iOS and Android, this brand new and engaging app is a must have for convention and is a free download. The app features a full and customizable schedule, general information, tour and shuttle information, safety features and more. It operates with limited to no Internet connection, making it convenient to use on the go.Visit the Career and College ExpoEach year several companies and organizations exhibit at the Career Expo and give FFA members who attend a chance to talk and network with industry professionals or possible future employers. The opportunity to engage with these companies and organizations helps prepare students for future career success — one of the three pillars that make up the National FFA Organization’s mission statement. In addition to visiting with industry professionals and businesses, students are able to talk with representatives from different colleges from across the country and learn about their educational programs — it’s not often that so many colleges are all in one location at the same time.“Colleges and Universities from across the country are looking for FFA members to enroll in their programs,” said Amy Jo Baughman, Program Coordinator in the Office of Prospective Student Services at The Ohio State University’s College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences. “If FFA has sparked a passion for leadership and learning then make it a point to stop by the collegiate booths at the Career Expo to begin planning your future after high school.”Convention WorkshopsStudents are able to register and attend various workshops throughout convention with topics such as service and decision-making. By participating in workshops, students are able to build relationships with FFA members from different states while developing their personal leadership skills.Living to ServeAnother must-see while walking around the convention expo is National FFA’s Living to Serve Boot Camp booth. Located in Expo Booth 1, the booth simulates a “boot camp” feel while inviting students to learn how to identify a community need and plan a service project to address that need.“After students attend our booth they will leave with a plan for a service project they can implement in their communities,” said Daniel Zimmerman, Living to Serve Program Manager at the National FFA Organization. “They can take their plan and meet with their advisor, officer team or other members of their chapter to expand their plan and actually put it into action.”The Living to Serve team is offering an FFA Week Grant to support the implementation of these service projects during FFA Week in mid-February next year. Information about the grant can be found on National FFA’s Living to Serve website: Applications are due on November 16, 2016.Sydney Snider’s retiring address from National FFA OfficeConvention marks the end of an experience-filled year of service with the National FFA Organization for 2015-2016 Eastern Region Vice President, Sydney Snider.Snider will deliver her Retiring Address on October 20, 2016 (Thursday evening) during the Third General Session at approximately 9 p.m. in the Indianapolis Convention Center.FFA members, advisors, parents and business leaders alike will be inspired and awed at one young person’s representation of what leadership development looks like in an organization such as the FFA.  Snider was elected to the 2015-2016 National FFA Officer team at the 88th National FFA Convention & Expo. Puel could include him in the squad for the Premier League match at home to Southampton on Saturday.”He has been brought back for many reasons but the primary reason is because he can help us,” said Puel. “The player has progressed, and I would like to thank West Bromwich and their manager for giving him the opportunities to play.”It is difficult (for West Brom) to lose a player like this but it is a good moment for him to come back and help his team-mates.”Harvey can bring different options. He can play on the left side, he can play as a striker and he can play just behind the striker. He is an attacking player and he has penetration.”He is a clinical player. He can start a move and finish a move. He is a complete player.
