first_imgARCADIA, Calif. (Jan. 24, 2016)–With the aptly named Rocket Heat blasting through fractions of 20.98, 42.82 and 1:06.25, Coastline, with Tyler Baze up, came flying up the rail to take command inside the sixteenth pole and win Sunday’s $75,000 Clockers’ Corner Stakes by 1 ¼ lengths. Trained by Phil D’Amato, Coastline covered 6 ½ furlongs down Santa Anita’s hillside turf course in 1:12.68.“It was a perfect trip today,” said Baze. “He jumped a little bit when we crossed the dirt (at the top of the stretch) but I rode him with a lot of confidence.”Second, beaten a neck in the Grade III Daytona Stakes down the hill on Dec. 26, Coastline, a      5-year-old Kentucky-bred horse by Speightstown, was off at 5-1 in a field of 10 older horses and paid $12.20, $5.20 and $3.80.“It looked like it was going to be close, but this horse is such a fighter,” said D’Amato. “Once he got his head in there, he just inched away and gave a good performance…I think he’ll go two turns. We’ll take a look, see what’s out there and go from there.”Owned by Agave Racing Stable and Jaam Racing, Inc., Coastline, who notched his first win from two tries over the course, improved his overall mark to 19-5-3-3. With the winner’s share of $46,800, he increased his earnings to $336,806.Ridden by Edwin Maldonado, Rocket Heat was off as the 5-2 favorite and paid $3.80 and $3.20.“That’s his game, you gotta let him roll,” said Maldonado, who, with the temporary inner rail set at 30 feet, opened up by 3 ½ lengths after the first half mile. “I tried to get him to relax without choking him down. The winner went in 12 and change, that’s pretty fast.”Ridden by Flavien Prat, English-bred Cape Wolfe rallied for third money, finishing 1 ¼ lengths in front of deep closer Bench Warrant. Off at 13-1, Cape Wolfe paid $7.60 to show.Racing resumes at Santa Anita on Thursday, with first post time at 1 p.m. Admission gates open at 11 a.m.last_img read more

UPSTART BOLO FIRES FRESH & DEFEATS FAVORED OBVIOUSLY BY A NECK IN GRADE II, $200,000 ARCADIA STAKES; PRAT & GAINES TEAM FOR MILE TURF WIN IN 1:33.09

August 2, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgBOLO TO CONSIDER SURFACE SWITCH TO $1 MILLION SANTA ANITA HANDICAP ON MARCH 12 ARCADIA, Calif. (Feb. 13, 2016)–A Kentucky Derby hopeful a year ago, 4-year-old Bolo proved himself a nationally prominent turf horse Saturday at Santa Anita, as he ran down heavily favored Obviously late to take the Grade II, $200,000 Arcadia Stakes by a neck under Flavien Prat. Trained by Carla Gaines and idle since July 4, Bolo negotiated one mile on turf in 1:33.09 and is now undefeated in three tries over the Santa Anita lawn.A measured second, two lengths off the favorite past the half mile pole, Bolo got outside pressure from eventual third place finisher Om going to the far turn, shook him off turning for home and gradually wore down Obviously to win going away at the wire.“I couldn’t watch at the end,” said Santa Anita Chairman Keith Brackpool, on behalf of the ownership of Golden Pegasus Racing, Inc., and Earle I. Mack, LLC. “I couldn’t watch, but it was unbelievable. Carla did just an incredible job, incredible. Her patience over a seven month period drives me crazy, but then in one day, it all comes together.”Off at 7-1 in a field of five older horses, Bolo paid $17.40, $7.20 and $3.00. A Kentucky-bred colt by Temple City, he notched his fourth win from nine starts and with the winner’s share of $120,000, increased his earnings to $408,700.“You have to be closer on the turf the way it’s playing, so it worked out well,” said Prat, who rode Bolo for the first time. “I knew the pace was already fast (set by Obviously; 22.70, 45.67, 1:09.13 and 1:20.99) but I had to get out and go (around the far turn) because Obviously was still in front of me. When I came up next to Obviously, he picked it back up…but I knew Bolo can get the distance and in the end, Obviously came back to us.”Although all four of his career wins have come on turf, Brackpool left the door open for a possible return to dirt in the mile and a quarter $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 12.“It seems like every other horse I hear about is being considered for Dubai,” he said. “So we’ve got lots of options.”As for Gaines, she was obviously pleased with the way Bolo came back running off the bench.“The horse had a terrific trip,” she said. “All I told Flavien was to let him break and find his place in the race. I felt he’d be sitting right behind the leaders and he would still have a kick home. That’s exactly what happened. I’m just so thrilled…Did I think he was going to get there? I’m not sure. I was screaming very loud.”Irish-bred Obviously, one of America’s best turf milers dating back to 2012, was cutting back in distance from a mile and one eighth and appeared to have things his own way on the lead.“He settled great and he ran really well,” said Mike Smith, who was aboard the 8-year-old for the first time in the Arcadia. “They went in (one) thirty three to beat us. That’s pretty impressive. I wouldn’t say the this track favors speed, but…He just got run down today.”Off at 4-5, Obviously paid $3.00 and $2.10.Om, who came off a rousing win here in the Grade II Mathis Brother Mile (turf) on Dec. 26, sat a comfortable third early with Gary Stevens and went after the top two going to the far turn, but proved third best. The second choice at 8-5, he paid $2.10 to show.last_img read more

Liverpool not just the ‘Fab Four’- Klopp

DD Fitness: It’s time to man up and look after your health

December 21, 2019 0 Comments

first_imgThis week our fitness guru Emmet Rushe takes a look ahead to Men’s Health Week which is highlighted this coming week. It runs from Monday 10th of June to Sunday 16th of June and is an important week as it highlights all the things, we as men tend to hide from.We like to think we are infallible and that the different health scares and things we see and read about could never happen to us. We have grown up in a society where talking about your feelings is largely frowned upon and is a show of weakness if we do it.But that isn’t the case.We are neither infallible or weak, most of the time we are stupid or afraid or some combination of the 2.So, it’s time to man up and start taking care of our physical and mental health. If you are in a bad place mentally, talk to someone. There is only a 50% chance that men who are feeling depressed would talk to someone about it.We can view this as a sign of weakness and this leaves us in a place where we bottle it up instead of telling someone.Don’t leave things until they are too late.Hiding things from your partner or family or friends might be what we tend to do, but it isn’t manly and it sure as hell isn’t smart. Talk to your partnerTalk to your G.PTalk to a colleague or friend.Just talk and don’t try and deal with things on your own.Ireland has one of the highest obesity rates in the world. 38% of Irish men are obese and it is growing each year. While being overweight is becoming ‘accepted’ and is being normalised, it is NOT normal and there are worse things that come from being overweight or obese. Engage Your Audience with YouTube’s New Community Tab

December 12, 2019 0 Comments

first_imgYouTube recently introduced their latest feature to help bring content creators closer to their audiences: the community tab.  Here’s the lowdown.Cover image via Shutterstock.Personal engagement with your audience can lead to a significant increase in viewership, a more dedicated fanbase, or (if you’re advertising a product or skill through YouTube), a sale. While YouTube has made significant changes over the last two years in bringing content creators closer to their audiences, such as being able to pin and favorite comments, the new community tab is the first time YouTube has offered features similar to a Facebook Page.Note: At the moment, the community tab is only available to some channels, and your channel must have more than 10,000 subscribers. What’s New?Create a text post or share an image.Image via Vidya Vox.Ok, there’s no denying that this is remarkably similar to the main feature of a Facebook page. You can post a text update, share an image, or upload a gif, and your audience can reply with comments and like or dislike what you posted. However, the reality that this is now an option on YouTube is brilliant. Often, you’ll find that many creators and YouTube-based brands will set up Facebook pages and Twitter accounts to post updates to their audience because other than making a video, there has been no real way to reach your audience instantaneously. Now, you can directly post an update to your entire subscriber base, and the update will appear on their subscription feed. It’s rare to see a content creator’s full subscriber base directly translate into Twitter or Facebook followers. Now, knowing that every word is heading straight to the people who care about your content is deeply rewarding. Going to miss a weekly upload because of an external factor? Publish a text post. This new feature is also great for channels with a more professional appeal that don’t allow the subscriber base to see the personality of a creator. Educational channels, for example, could likely fall into this category. As the Kloons state in the video above,As a channel that doesn’t usually rely on personality, we rely more on scripting, it’s been a great way for us to show the more ‘personality’ side of us.The community tab allows you to break away from your channel’s format and interact in a new way.Feedback From The CommunityImage via Vidya Vox.When your channel surpasses a certain threshold, it can become a daunting task to respond to individual comments — especially when you start to get 200-500 per video. However, in the new community tab, you can now create a poll and get direct feedback from the community. For example, you could create a poll to see what video your community wants to see next, or you could even give them a say in what content you will create. This could put an end to creating content that doesn’t gain the traction you hoped for.As with all new website features, this looks to be in its early stage, and there’s a lot of room for improvement. However, this is an exciting new feature for the platform. From the smallest of content creators to the largest of brands, this changes how you can engage with your audience on YouTube.Image via YouTube. If you’re stuck making your first post, YouTube has put together four tips to get you started:Poll to learn what your audience wants to see next: You can quiz your subscribers to see what they want to see next and consider refining your content based on their suggestions.Grow excitement with GIFs: Consider offering a sneak peek of the best moments from each video with a GIF and get your subscribers fired up to watch.Bring them backstage: Give your subscribers an exclusive look backstage during your tour or at a shoot by posting pictures or quick videos. You can even ask for their opinion on the creative process.Offer exclusive content: Try posting pictures or unlisted videos that your audience can’t find anywhere else. Consider posting fun pics of your day, your adventures, or even your pets. Providing a unique experience for your subscribers on the Community tab is a great way to keep your audience coming back for more.last_img read more

Djibouti DCT Move Prompted by Terminals Poor Performance

October 23, 2019 0 Comments

first_imgzoom The Government of Djibouti cancelled its concession contract with Dubai-based terminal operator DP World on February 22 due to the recent poor performance of the Doraleh Container Terminal (DCT).According to a statement released by the Djibouti Ports and Free Zones Authority (DPFZA), since 2008, DCT has achieved only 57% of its total volume, despite operating in a favourable import/export environment.“In the meantime, DP World developed other ports in the countries close to Djibouti and used aggressive tactics such as the deliberate slowing of the development of DCT in favour of their main asset at Jebel Ali,” DPFZA said. The authority added that the operations agreement for the terminal, awarded in 2006, was not for DP World to design, build and operate DCT, but a joint venture between DP World (with 33.33% of the shares) and Port Autonome International de Djibouti (with 66.66% of the shares). The original agreement excluded Djibouti from decision-making processes and the management of the company.Last month, the authority launched negotiations with DP World in an effort to reach a settlement deal which included the purchase of DP World’s stake. The port operator declared its intention to sell the shares in DCT, but subsequently added a restriction on Djibouti developing new ports on its territory.“This condition, which poses a serious threat to Djibouti’s national sovereignty, was rejected by the Government of Djibouti,” DPFZA informed.Djibouti has therefore asserted its legal right to assume management of DCT, which has now been placed under the authority of the Doraleh Container Terminal Management Company (DCTMC).Following the decision, UAE’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Gargash informed via social media that “Djibouti government’s seizure of the Doraleh port is regrettable.”DP World has launched new arbitration proceedings in London against the Government of Djibouti over the decision. DP World dubbed the move “illegal seizure of control” and a culmination of the government’s campaign to force the company to renegotiate the terms of the concession.last_img read more

Dear Jeff Lynne and all involved in my residency

first_imgDear Jeff, Lynne and all involved in my residency at Arcosanti,I have just returned to my home in the San Juan Islands, filled with deep appreciation to you all for making these past few days among the most memorable ever for me.[photo: Daga Suchon, violin, Morten Loridsen and Sally Gebler, dance]To each of you–conductors, singers, instrumentalists, dancer, photographer, the many generous patrons and promoters, Shining Night screeners, art gallery and concert co-ordinators—I thank you for your artistry and dedication to my music. You gave your audiences and me such a special gift that will be long remembered. And of course my stay at Arcosanti and my visit to Cosanti opened my mind to the genius of Paolo Soleri. I came home not only with the beautiful bell presented to me by Jeff but many others I could not resist at the gallery shop–all of which will be adorning my homes in the islands as a constant reminder to my residency.[photo: Morten Loridsen receives one of the famous “Minds for History” bells as a special recognition]In addition to the wonderful concerts I savored very much the opportunity to speak at the choral workshop (what fabulous performances there by Dr. Copley and the NAU choir!) and at the gallery in Scottsdale.  As I’m sure you realized, I feel very strongly and deeply about numerous things that I was able to discuss in some depth in my talks and in the documentary film. I hope you all came away from this experience enriched in some way through my music, the poetry I’ve set and my words.[photo: At the end of the evening all of the choirs gathered on and round the stage, like 220 people, and sang and were joined by the audience for “For the Beauty of the Earth”]I send each of you my heartfelt gratitude for these most memorable days spent at Arcosanti/Scottsdale and trust that our paths will cross again.Sincerely,Morten LauridsenDistinguished Professor of Composition, USC Thornton School of MusicNEA-Designated “American Choral Master”Honorary Artistic President, INTERKULTUR/World Choir GamesRecipient, 2007 National Medal of Artsmortenlauridsen.net September 25, 2015We received a letter from Morten Lauridsen, also some wonderful photos from Alison Steier. Many thanks to Alison Steier for sharing all of the photos in this post with us.Here we see Morten Lauridsen on piano and Jeff Stein.last_img read more
