Premier League team of the weekend: Shaqiri, Mahrez and Wijnaldum star in chosen XI

December 30, 2019 0 Comments

first_img 11 11 3. Centre back: Winston Reid (West Ham United) – The New Zealand international put in a superb performance at Old Trafford, frustrating Manchester United who struggled to create any opening on goal. 11 1. Goalkeeper: Artur Boruc (Bournemouth) – to find out who else makes the Prem team of the weekend, click the arrow above – Jose Mourinho’s men are the shadow of the team they were in their title-winning campaign, but credit must be given to newly-promoted Bournemouth, and in particular Boruc, for earning a deserved clean sheet against the Blues in a 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge. 11 6. Right midfield: Xherdan Shaqiri (Stoke City) – It’s about time Shaqiri turned up at the Britannia Stadium. The Switzerland international hasn’t quite got his career off to the blistering start many may have expected, but he proved a nightmare for Manchester City, setting up both of Arnautovic’s goals. 11 7. Centre midfield: Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal) – With Francis Coquelin and Santi Cazorla injured, Ramsey, who has played largely on the right wing, may be given a run in the centre of the park. Wenger opted for just this against Sunderland, and the Welshman thrived. 8. Left midfield: Riyad Mahrez (Leicester City) – Since the start of the season, Jamie Vardy has been hogging the limelight for the Foxes, but their victory over Swansea City was all about Mahrez. He became the first Algerian to score a Premier League hat-trick, and there could be plenty more where this came from. 11 11 2. Right back: Adam Smith (Bournemouth) – The former England Under-21 international’s performances have slipped under the radar this season, but he is slowly emerging as one of the most exciting players in his position. It was another impressive weekend for Smith, who wasn’t intimidated by his superstar opponents. 11 It was another weekend of shock results in the Premier League. The big-guns of England’s top flight all failed to excite their loyal fans, with Chelsea, Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United disappointing to sum up what has been a wholly unpredictable season.Once again, in what has become a familiar sight this campaign, Leicester City revelled in victory to go two points clear of second-placed Arsenal at the top of the table. But which players impressed the most over the weekend?Find out our chosen XI by clicking the yellow arrow above, right. 11 10. Striker: Odion Ighalo (Watford) – Ighalo has been superb for the Hornets this season, with his form key to their position in the top half of the table. Norwich City’s Sebastien Bassong couldn’t cope with the striker, who added to his tally to make it nine Premier League goals so far this term. 11 9. Attacking midfield: Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle United) – Along with Moussa Sissoko, Wijnaldum put in one of his best performances in a Newcastle shirt, with Liverpool left stunned at St James’ Park by his two strikes nestling in the back of the net to seal three crucial points for the Magpies. 11 4. Centre back: Ryan Shawcross (Stoke City) – Shawcross isn’t everyone’s favourite player, but he is key to the Potters’ formidable defensive record. Mark Hughes’ men kept out title-challengers Manchester City with ease, and the club are yet to concede a Premier League goal with their captain on the field this season. 5. Left back: Aaron Cresswell (West Ham United) – Cresswell hasn’t quite lit up the Premier League as he did last season, but he looks to be returning to top form. The defender put in an excellent performance against the Red Devils at both ends of the pitch. 11. Striker: Marko Arnautovic (Stoke City) – The only disappointment from Arnautovic’s performance is that he didn’t grab a hat-trick. The Austrian should have scored more than the two goals against Manuel Pellegrini’s side, in what was his finest performance for the club.last_img read more

Garry Monk close to Swansea exit as chairman Huw Jenkins admits ‘something needs to change’

December 30, 2019 0 Comments

first_imgGETTY Monk took charge of Birmingham in March 2018 after spells at Middlesbrough, Leeds and Swansea 1center_img Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins has dropped a strong hint that manager Garry Monk is on his way out of the Welsh club, after declaring that “something needs to change”.Reports on Monday suggested the Englishman was on the brink of the sack after being called into crunch talks with the club’s board following Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to in-form Leicester City.Monk took first-team training as normal on Tuesday but Jenkins – in London to collect his OBE for services to sport in Wales – indicated an announcement on his future could be imminent.“We all feel at the club that something needs to change to get things back on a positive note as quickly as possible and get us back to the levels of performances we have got to have to win games at the Premier League level,” the Liberty Stadium chief said.Jenkins refused to confirm whether Monk would be sacked, but asked if an announcement would be made on Tuesday, replied: “Not today, because I am up here [in London].”Swansea have won once in their last 13 games and the weekend’s loss left them just one point above the relegation zone.Monk survived showdown talks with Jenkins on Monday but his departure now seems just a matter of time with Brendan Rodgers and David Moyes among those strongly linked with the Liberty Stadium post.Monk steered the Swans to an eighth-place finish in the top-flight last season but their form has nose-dived during this campaign, prompting Jenkins to admit major changes are necessary.Jenkins added: “The difference between the end of August and how we find ourselves today is something we haven’t experienced at Swansea before, such a big change around from where we were after beating Man United in the last game in August.“I think it just again highlights if things are not dealt with and addressed early enough the Premier League is very unforgiving, and unless every angle and everybody’s focus is 100% week in, week out, things can change very quickly.”last_img read more

Stoke striker ponders future at the Britannia

December 30, 2019 0 Comments

first_img Former England forward Peter Crouch Peter Crouch helped book Stoke’s place in the fourth round of the FA Cup at Doncaster on Saturday, then warned he may be forced to quit the club due to his lack of first team chances. The 34-year-old scored his side’s first-half opener then played a part in Jonathan Walters’ thundering second after Nathan Tyson’s equaliser threatened to serve up an upset for the League One side.Leeds United manager Steve Evans has admitted to enquiries into the former England striker’s availability, but he was told a deal would not be happening. The 6ft 7in forward has now started just five games for the Potters this season – all of them in the Cup – and admitted his frustration at falling out of the first team picture after a hamstring injury.Crouch told the Potters’ website: “Ideally I’d like to stay at Stoke because I think we’re a top 10 side and I’d like to be a part of that.“But I’ve got to be realistic – I’ve featured hardly at all in the Premier League and that’s what I want to be doing. If needs be I’ll have to move on but I’d rather not.“It’s been frustrating at times when you don’t feel part of the group but all you can do is work hard and get back in there – and hopefully I’ve done myself a bit of justice.Mark Hughes’ desire to keep hold of Crouch will be obvious after an excellent performance which began with the striker producing a deft finish to put his side ahead after just 15 minutes.Crouch responded sweetly to a right-wing cross from team-mate Joselu to send a neat shot past Thorsten Stuckmann and seemingly pave the way for a comfortable win for the favourites. 1last_img read more

Norwich manager Alex Neil hopeful club can secure deal for Everton forward

December 30, 2019 0 Comments

first_img Steven Naismith 1 Norwich manager Alex Neil remains hopeful of closing out a deal for Everton’s Steven Naismith this month. The Canaries are said to be in pole position to capture the Scotland international after holding advanced talks with Everton.Naismith, who has scored 18 Premier League goals in 103 appearances for the Toffees, has been a long-term target for Neil, but with the transfer window already well over two weeks old the Norwich boss has so far been unable to land his man.“It has been nearly there for the best part of two weeks, so we will wait and see,” said Neil of the 29-year-old Everton forward.“There has been a lot of talk about it but until things are complete and over the line there is not much to say.“He is an established Premier League player, who has played in this division for countless years and he has got goals, too.“He is versatile, in terms of he can play off either flank, he can play as a 10 and he can play as a nine. He is experienced, he is determined and he has got good legs and can get about the pitch.“He is an international and he is a good lad off the pitch, so there is a whole host of reasons as to why we would be interested in that type of player.”Neil, who was speaking following his side’s 3-0 defeat at Bournemouth, also confirmed his interest in signing Wolfsburg defender Timm Klose after reports in Germany claimed the two clubs had reached an agreement. But after seeing his Norwich side outclassed on the south coast, Neil insists the result will not sway his decision-making in the transfer market.“What we are not going to do is respond on the back of one result,” Neil added.“We have been poor today and we have lost the game, but what I am not going to do is say we need another five or six players as the boys haven’t been doing well enough, because that is not the case.“That team selected today has been relatively consistent from the line-up in the last five or six games, and they have managed to put three or four wins together.“The bottom line is we did not perform well enough and at this level if you don’t perform well enough you are not going to win games.“We are still trying to attract players – that was the same before this game – and that remains the same after this game.”last_img read more
