Jamaica Language Unit Moves to get Jamaican Creole Officially Recognized

August 31, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgKINGSTON, Jamaica, – The Jamaican Language Unit at the University of the West Indies (UWI), says it will be leading the national conversation on the appropriate positioning of the Jamaican language in official spaces. The discussion, under the slogan ‘Make Jamaican Official… Just Do it’, is the unit’s contribution to the 100 days of activities planned to celebrate the centenary anniversary of the birth of cultural icon, Dr. Louise Bennett-Coverley, popularly known as ”Miss Lou”.The Unit said it hopes that coming out of the discussion, the government will move to make the Jamaican language official, alongside English.Professor Emeritus at the Jamaican Language Unit, Hubert Devonish, said a meeting will be held with “friends” of the Jamaican language on September 26, to plan the public discussion, which is scheduled to begin October 1.“We want to go to all the parish capitals, churches, community groups, and so on, where we would be having a discussion about whether the Jamaican language should be made official and what does that mean,” he told a Jamaica Information Service Reporter.Devonish said that the meeting will also identify the needs at government entities “so that when people visit [public officers] can provide the service in any of the languages that people feel that they want to use, offering respectful and efficient service”.He said that on November 1, the Language Unit will launch a 40-day online petition “to ask Parliament to pass legislation to grant official status to the Jamaican language alongside English”.This will be followed by a symposium at UWI on December 10, “which will pull together all the discussions that we would have had with the groups with a view to putting together a report.“This report, we hope, backed by hundreds of thousands of signatures from the online petition, will represent our gift to the government and eventually the Parliament that will form the basis for legislation that would grant official status to the Jamaican language, alongside English,” Devonish said. The centenary anniversary celebrations for Miss Lou are being spearheaded by the Ministry of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sport in partnership with the Institute of Gender and Development Studies, Regional Coordinating Office and other stakeholders.Miss Lou was born on September 7, 1919, and died on July 26, 2006, in Canada.last_img read more

William Hill pursues HMRC FOBTs rebate

August 30, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgShare Betfred counters Oppenheimer bid in race to rescue Phumelela August 26, 2020 Share StumbleUpon William Hill has followed counterparts Betfred and Rank Group Plc in issuing an HMRC claim on compensation owed from tax charges related to fixed-odds betting terminals (FOBTs). The FTSE bookmaker could stand to secure a multi-million £ tax rebate on FOBT charges issued between 2005 and 2013.William Hill’s HMRC rebate stands from an April High Court ruling that favoured a joint appeal issued by Betfred and Rank which contested HMRC VAT charges on machine duties, as operators could exempt charges in accordance to EU taxation policies and its precedent on fiscal neutrality. The High Court sided with the betting operators on the grounds that HMRC had made no distinction with regards to the ‘supply of games’ until it updated its VAT policy in January 2013.Having lost two separate court rulings against Betfred and Rank, HMRC announced last week that it would no longer pursue further tribunal judgement on the tax dispute.Following the High Court ruling, William Hill became the first bookmaker to seek compensation from the government. Updating investors, William Hill stated that it was examining scenarios related to its rebate fee.“Whilst William Hill currently expects the net cash recovery to be material, its precise quantum remains uncertain. Nevertheless, the board has considered a number of scenarios which suggest a potential net cash recovery of between £125 million and £150 million,” the bookmaker detailed in a statement issued to the media. Capcom announces Street Fighter mobile game

August 29, 2020 0 Comments

first_imgThe Street Fighter series will expand its reach onto mobile thanks to a collaboration between Beeline, a Capcom subsidiary, and Skillz, a mobile esports platform. A new game for mobile platforms was announced, along with an in-client competitive platform for live battles. They emphasised the competitive experience in a press release, describing “a wholly unique and competitive Street Fighter experience on mobile.” The venture will also have “live broadcast competitions integrated natively within the game, powered by the Skillz platform.” While it seems Capcom, through Beeline, will be heading the game itself, Skillz lends its claimed background in esports hosting by providing a platform for live battles. While they are vague about their portfolio, Skillz describes its role in these games as not only managing the tournament itself, but assisting with broadcasting and spectating the games. The company claims to manage the esports component of over 3,000 game studios and “more than 30 percent of all esports [sic] awards in 2016” and over 4 million minutes of game footage broadcasted to fans. “With this partnership, Street Fighter will define the future of competitive mobile gameplay,” said Andrew Paradise, CEO and Founder of Skillz in the release. This is the convergence of Capcom’s recent ventures into competitive fighting games and mobile games respectively. While Beeline hasn’t produced any smash hits, it’s developed a line of franchised games for names such as Shrek, Ghostbusters and Snoopy the Dog. Capcom may be looking more closely at Capcom Mobile’s Android remaster of Ace Attorney: Dual Destinies, which released late May. (The game was also released for iOS in 2014.) Meanwhile, Street Fighter as a franchise has exploded in popularity due to its competitive aspect and the release of Street Fighter V in February 2016. The franchise was already an arcade staple, and despite the fifth iteration not having an arcade release, it became an overnight esports hit. The game’s success was further proven by Turner Media’s television series ELeague, an invite series of many of the top players in the game (though it wasn’t part of the Pro Tour). This will be Capcom’s newest foray in mixing the genre and platform, though its previous game, Street Fighter X Tekken for iOS, didn’t have a similar esports focus. The new project will be met in app stores by the indie fighter hit Skullgirls, which saw its full release this month, plus other franchised apps such as Marvel’s Contest of Champions and DC’s Injustice. Esports Insider says: This could be a high-risk/high-reward move by Capcom. They have the sheer popularity and charm of their games and brands to last them a few lifetimes. Of course, that’s in a familiar way as, say, Angry Birds. It’s anyone’s guess as to whether the game’s competitive platform will be well-received and viable when push comes to shove. Here’s hoping, if only for the next generation of gamers, who genuinely love their mobile apps.last_img read more
