Guna: The engine of a Guna-bound passenger train caught fire Tuesday between Taravat and Bilonia railway stations in Madhya Pradesh, but nobody was injured in the incident, a railway official said. After spotting the fire, the loco pilot of the Gwalior-Bina-Damoh passenger train applied the brakes, following which passengers got off on the tracks. Guna station falls under the Bhopal division of the West Central Railways. “Nobody was injured in the incident which occurred around 12:40 pm,” said Guna-Gwalior section engineer Chandra Prakash Gupta. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
15 April 2009Claiming that piracy off the coast of Somalia is wreaking global havoc, the top United Nations representative for the Horn of Africa country has called for an increase in efforts to fight what he calls an “international scourge.” “I strongly believe that concrete efforts, such as the international maritime presence off the Somali coast, should be increased to help marginalize and suppress piracy,” Ahmedou Ould-Abdallah, Special Representative of Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said yesterday.Commenting on the recent upsurge in pirate activity, Mr. Ould-Abdallah said that, “without the maritime presence, the pandemic would have been far worse. Those contributing to the international presence are doing an excellent job, but they have a huge area to cover.” He maintained that the recent operations by the Governments of the United States and France are sending a strong message to the pirates and their backers who, he said, “are exploiting the poverty and desperation of their young, unemployed compatriots.”Some 300 hostages and 17 vessels are being held by a small group who are only interested in maximizing their illegal profits, Mr. Ould-Abdallah claimed. “To ensure stability in Somalia and the region, as well as the freedom of navigation, the financial backers of the pirates should be identified quickly and held accountable,” said Mr Ould-Abdallah.He stressed, however, that a military solution, while essential, should be complemented by credible development activity. Somalia’s fledgling Government of National Unity, established in February, is tasked with fighting lawlessness in the country, which has been riven by factional fighting and had not had a functioning central government since the overthrow of Siad Barre in 1991.
…Jagdeo says Guyana heading to a constitutional crisisGeneral Secretary of the PPP/C Dr Bharrat JagdeoOpposition Leader Dr Bharrat Jagdeo on Monday hosted meetings at his Church Street office with foreign diplomats, where they were appraised about the political situation in Guyana following the No-confidence vote and the parliamentary opposition’s concerns.According to Jagdeo in an interview following the meeting, he raised concerns with the diplomats that Guyana may be heading towards a constitutional crisis with government’s sloth in calling elections between the constitutionally outlined period of 90 days after the motion was carried. Moreover, Jagdeo outlined that attempts by the government appointed Commissioners of the Guyana Election Commission’s (GECOM’s) to delay early elections is only aggravating the situation.“It is disastrous because I think, GECOM at the level of the Secretariat, from the documents they have provided to the Commission seem ready to start the process rolling. But at the level of the Commission, the Commissioners representing the government have now taken on a political role. Their rhetoric is similar to that of the government. So the President places house-to-house registration on the agenda…so suddenly Vincent Alexander, Trotman and Corbin representing the government on the Commission, they have been parroting the same language and it seems as though their only task there is to delay the start of preparations for elections. So their actions at GECOM is going to push us closer to a constitutional crisis faster.”The Opposition Leader explained that he also outlined to the diplomatic community how the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will act should Guyana reach this position.Making reference to the carried no confidence motion Jagdeo said “They are behaving as though noting happened and that we are in a normal situation when we are heading to a constitutional crisis…So I pointed out clearly about that rapid pathway to a constitutional crisis and what will take place.”Indian High Commissioner to Guyana V. Mahalingam, Mexico’s Ambassador to Guyana Ivan Medel and the Inter-American Development Bank country representative Sophie Makonnen, were among the diplomats who attended the meeting. On December 21, 2018, the no-confidence motion brought by the PPP against the Government succeeded when former Alliance For Change (AFC) Parliamentarian Charrandas Persaud broke ranks and made a conscience vote in favour of the motion. With the Government’s defeat, the next steps are spelt out in the Constitution of Guyana.Article 106 (6) of the Constitution states: “The Cabinet including the President shall resign if the Government is defeated by the vote of a majority of all the elected members of the National Assembly on a vote of confidence.”Meanwhile, 106 (7) goes on to state that “Notwithstanding its defeat, the Government shall remain in Office and shall hold an election within three months, or such longer period as the National Assembly shall by resolution supported by not less than two-thirds of the votes of all the elected members of the National Assembly determine, and shall resign after the President takes the oath of office following the election.”Since the passage of the motion, however, persons aligned with the coalition party have sought to question the motion’s validity even as the vote has already been certified. These arguments formed part of the opinions presented to Speaker of the National Assembly, Dr Barton Scotland, in the hopes that he would reverse the ruling. He refused to do so.Amid calls to resign, Government has insisted it is going nowhere until elections are held. Several court cases were filed, in which an order was sought to, among other things, delay the elections until the court rules on the matter. That and other related cases came up for hearing last Tuesday, but acting Chief Justice Roxane George committed to a ruling by the end of this month, while noting that such an order would be unnecessary. It seems to be a day for Apple product bezels to leak. We’ve already seen a white iPad 2 front bezel, but this next leak is decidedly more interesting. The image above is of an iPhone 5 bezel as seen on Chinese accessories site iDealsChina. The specific measurements of the bezel have not been given, but it looks to be similar in dimensions to the current iPhone 4 while allowing for a larger display.Such an edge-to-edge display for the new smartphone fits with earlier rumors of a 4″ screen. Removing the space from either side of the existing 3.5″ screen would allow for the extra half an inch. A minor overall dimension change may be required to fit the larger display in, but I doubt many will notice such a change.Below are a couple of mock-up images to give you an idea what the final iPhone 5 could look like as well as comparing it to iPhone 4: Read more at iDealsChina and 9 to 5 Mac, via Pocket-lintMatthew’s OpinionThere is very little Apple can do with the design of the iPhone to make it stand out from previous models. Jony Ive can’t mess too much with the classic button below the screen and curvature of the case. But if you can make a larger display fit within the same case dimensions that’s pretty huge in terms of catching a users’ eye.Just looking at the mock-ups above you can instantly see the difference in the new model while it manages to retain the iPhone look. If this is the final design it is going to go down very well with iPhone users. If the phone has somehow been made thinner and lighter too, that’s just a bonus.iPhone 5 is clearly going to be all about that gorgeous 4″ display enhanced by it having no edges.
WASHINGTON — U.S. employers added a robust 222,000 jobs in June, the most in four months, a reassuring sign that businesses may be confident enough to keep hiring despite a slow-growing economy. The government also revised up its estimate of job growth for April and May by a combined 47,000. Hiring has averaged nearly 180,000 jobs a month this year, only slightly below last year’s pace. The unemployment rate for June ticked up to 4.4 percent from 4.3 percent in May, a 16-year low. The jobless rate rose because more Americans began looking for work and not all of them found it.Friday’s jobs report from the government suggested that after eight years of a grinding but resilient recovery, companies still have room to hire at a healthy pace. Though the rate of job growth has slowed since 2014 and 2015, it’s still enough to draw in people who had previously stopped looking for work. The proportion of adults with jobs has reached 60.1 percent, just below April’s figure, which was the highest since the recession ended in 2009.The steadfast hiring could benefit President Donald Trump. Economists have raised concern that growth under Trump could begin to falter as the economic recovery enters its ninth year — the third-longest since World War II. So far, the job market and economy look broadly the same as they did last year, though Trump has boasted that his policies are accelerating hiring and growth.Even with June’s strong hiring, average hourly pay rose just 2.5 percent from a year earlier, below the 3.5 percent typical of a healthy economy. Employers in many industries remain reluctant to raise pay.

In a recent article released by the World Food Programme (WFP), a list of 10 of the most important world hunger facts was developed. The list is fascinating, as it takes a close look at the issue of world hunger as we go into this new year.A notable point from the article is the effect world hunger has on children—the most vulnerable of the population. In developing countries, much like those that the World Soy Foundation works in, one in four children are stunted, unable to reach their physical and mental potential, due to inadequate nutrition. Research shows that the first 1,000 days of a child’s life is the most critical time period for an appropriate, nourishing diet. The World Soy Foundation recognizes this need, and works to address it by helping infants, toddlers and pregnant women—bringing the power of protein-packed soy into their diets. By working with schools, cooking and administrative staff, and various institutions, the foundation is helping to reduce malnutrition across the globe. But, we need your help to continue furthering our work! Consider donating to the Acre Challenge by simply calculating the value of an acre of soybeans in your operation (yield multiplied by price) and give the gift of protein today! Around 650 bus drivers working for Arriva Durham County have voted to strike for a week from 6 January after rejecting a revised pay offer. The drivers, members of the Unite union based at Darlington, Durham, Redcar, Stockton and Whitby, voted by 72% to 28% to reject the proposal, which was made following the suspension of strike action scheduled to start on 16 December. It included a 75p hourly increase over two years in four instalments.Bob Bolam, Unite regional officer, said: “The core of the dispute is the anger the bus drivers feel because they believe they are the second-lowest paid drivers of all the Arriva bus companies across the UK.“The revised offer failed to bridge that pay gap and our members can’t endure this glaring pay inequality. The ball is now very much in the management’s court.”Nigel Featham, head of Arriva buses in the region, said: “We regret Unite’s decision to call a strike in the new year. Arriva has done everything in its power to avoid this outcome, having made considerable concessions in pay talks.“Industrial action will achieve nothing but misery for the travelling public. Our offer, the best made to our drivers in modern times, remains on the table.”
1:45 Five cameras, but no five 5G. Sarah Tew/CNET Nokia phone maker HMD brought five phones to Mobile World Congress this year, and one of them even had five cameras. But not a single one of them had 5G.5G Nokia phones are coming, said HMD CEO Florian Seiche in an interview with CNET at the show on Sunday in Barcelona, but probably not until 2020. The company is working with Qualcomm to bring 5G devices to market, but isn’t necessarily busting its gut to join the first wave of phones.”We believe that this year is literally the first introduction round, so we think probably early next year is a good time for a mass-market 5G rollout in the key markets where we see an opportunity like Western Europe and the US,” said Seiche. The US market, however, is very much in its sights. HMD brought all-new Nokia to the US for the first time last year with Nokia 6, and announced carrier partnerships with Verizon, Cricket and Rogers at the start of this year.”The US is definitely is our laser focus for this year and for sure,” said Seiche. “The market dynamics allowed us to enter that market faster than we were thinking.”The aim for now is to deepen the partnerships the company has already built, but that doesn’t mean HMD won’t look to other carriers to offer Nokia phones too.”We definitely want to capture as much of the US opportunity as fast as possible,” said Seiche. “I can’t announce any new partnerships today, but we are very much focused on the US.” Tags Jun 1 • The Nubia Alpha looks like either a house arrest bracelet or Batman’s phone Phones 28 Photos MWC 2019: All the phones and gadgets we cared about Preview • Review • May 13 • Galaxy S10E vs. iPhone XR: Every spec compared Now playing: Watch this: Nokia 6 See it Share your voice CNET may get a commission from retail offers. 1 Mobile World Congress 2019 • Jul 9 • Killer cameras and battery life might meet their match in the Note 10 Jun 29 • Galaxy S10 5G, OnePlus 7 Pro LG V50 ThinQ 5G: Why you shouldn’t rush to buy a 5G phone See All Galaxy S10 Plus review Mobile World Congress 2019 As the next generation of network technology, 5G is set to improve capacity, latency and speed of mobile networks, offering opportunities for the growth of smart cities, autonomous vehicles and virtual and augmented reality. But those same qualities mean it’s also set to take the mobile internet experience people enjoy today to the next level, and the introduction of the technology this year means that it’s big news at MWC 2019.Much of the mobile world is charging ahead with 5G network rollout and the introduction of early devices compatible with those networks — but industry insiders are touting 2020 as the year when consumer adoption of the new tech will really take off. And HMD is hardly the phone maker not rushing to jump on the 5G bandwagon. Apple is unlikely to bring out its 5G iPhone until next year, based on the availability of 5G modems from its preferred chipmaker.HMD is also standing firm on its promise to target the mass market with a solid midrange selection of phones. Unlike many phone makers, which are starting to push their most expensive phones over the $1,000 price mark, Nokia phones are all priced at under $700. Freema Agyeman. Karen Gillan. Arthur Darvill. Jenna Coleman. Pearl Mackie. Mandip Gill.Recently revealed as one in a trio of new Thirteenth Doctor companions, Gill carries the torch for those zero-to-hero Doctor Who actors who came before her.The 20-something’s first television gig came in 2012, when she landed a main-cast part as Phoebe Jackson/McQueen on British soap opera Hollyoaks (where she shared nine episodes with future Who colleague Tosin Cole). From homeless teenager to train crash victim to murder suspect, Phoebe had a good three-year run on the teen drama before being poisoned by the Gloved Hand Killer.Gill as Phoebe McQueen on ‘Hollyoaks’ (via Channel 4)Gill followed her plum role with a guest spot on BBC sitcom Cuckoo, before appearing in a five-episode arc of Doctors (playing a pregnant homeless woman—typecast much?).If you missed her recent walk-on performances in The Good Karma Hospital and Casualty, viewers can catch Gill in the new BBC series Love, Lies and Records (alongside the fabulous Ashley Jensen), and in 2018 drama The Flood (starring Game of Thrones‘ Lena Headey and Iain Glen).Or just wait until the autumn, when Jodie Whittaker steps out as the first female Doctor, accompanied by her three sidekicks: Graham (Bradley Walsh), Ryan (Cole), and Yasmin (Gill).“This is an iconic show with an amazing fanbase and I look forward to everything that brings,” Gill said last month, no doubt bracing herself for the coming storm. “Certain roles seem unattainable and this is one of those, so much so I didn’t believe it to be true for the first few weeks.”Mandip Gill as Shazia Amin in a 2016 episode of “Doctors” (via BBC)She’s not the only one buzzing with excitement for the new season: Gill’s alma mater University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) proudly shared the good tidings in a Halloween announcement.“It was clear in her acting-for-screen classes that she had real potential so it’s no surprise to see she has done so well in TV,” Terence Chapman, acting lecturer at UCLan, said in a statement.“There has been so much in the press in recent years about the lack of diversity in the industry and in actor training,” he continued. “As a young British/Asian woman from a working-class background, Mandip is a great ambassador for what we are trying to achieve here.”Keep an eye on Geek for more on the new cast (including Sharon D.
